Wonder and wisdom

Everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn, whatever state I may be in, therein to be content.

Helen Keller

Socrates said that wonder is the beginning of wisdom. Maybe because what enchants us ends up being what we spend time pondering and paying attention to. Wonder, it seems to me, requires practicing paying attention.

We all know that children generally do this better than adults. Open-minded curiosity characterizes these little people.

On this beautiful Michigan afternoon in September, there is much to wonder about. Perhaps we'll find ourselves amazed at a lovely bird song, a new taste, an incredible landscape, a brilliant piece of artwork, or even some silent moments in eyes-closed darkness.

Whatever it is - may we be enchanted and may we be grateful.
